With the season, just three weeks away, the anticipation is
rising for the Hornets. Your Delaware State Hornets favored to win its 4th MEAC Northern Division softball title according to the MEAC Preseason Polls. The Delaware State softball team opens their
season with a tournament in South Carolina against Western Carolina and USC
Upstate.
With the hopeful returners, Dani Velez (2B/3B), Tara Tursellino (P), Mika Lumsden (OF), Vanessa Washington (C), Khaliyah Flournory (OF), Jessica Shalongo (P), Sabrina Quarles (OF), and Alexis Goldsby (P), the Hornets look forward to the competition that this season will bring. "I am excited for this upcoming season because it is my last season and I can't wait to make it the best one yet" said senior Dani Velez.
New to the roster are freshmen, Jordan Casey (SS), Kaleigh
Berry (OF), Micaela Cummings (1B), Hannah Shields (P), Desiree Moreno (C), and
Jasmine Melgoza (2B/3B). " Personally, I am thrilled about the upcoming season. It has been something I have dreamed of since I was little and I can't wait to get out there and play with my teammates."said freshmen Jordan Casey. During the fall, the freshman got a little taste of Division I collegiate softball, but in just three short weeks
they will get to experience their first season playing for the Delaware State
University Hornets! Trust us, they are more than ready to get their cleats
dirty!
Head Coach, Amber Jackson and Assistant Coach, Jessica
Mattia and Graduate Assistants Chloe Oro and Joel Jean-Simon are also excited
for the season to start. "All of the players are excited to start playing games. Practices have been going well and the energy has been high." says Coach Mattia. The Hornets have been working hard on fielding,
hitting and speed training during pre-season and plan to see the girls hard
work pay off this season.
